Description

The Morris C.8 had been in service with the Royal Army for many years as a portee for 2 pdr and 6 pdr anti tank guns before finally being converted to tow the new 17 pounder anti tank gun.The cutaway bonnet was to house an anti aircraft gun but was rarely used due to British air supremacy. The new 17 pounder first entered service in March 1943 and was used in Tunesia, North Africa. With its 2.900FPS muzzle velocity and increased shell weight it was able to penetrate the frontal armour of the newly arrived Tiger Tank sent to back up German forces, which until then the R.A. 6 pounders could not penetrate. The 76,2 mm calibre gun could fire a wide range of shells including H.E. and was able to play a small part in the massive offensive barrages of 1944-45 in N.W. Europe.
