The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft was developed from Northrop Aviation`s P-530 Cobra design. This was a Norhrop entry to the international fighter competition design program of the 1970`s. Later designated the YF-17, it lost the competition to General Dynimics '' F-16 '' Fighting Falcon ''. during this same period, the US Navy was looking for a less expensive lightweight fighter and the McDonnell douglas Corporation proposed to alther YF-17 design to Navy requirements and use Northrop as a prime sub-contrator. Redesignated the F/A-18, the aircraft has several under wings hardpoints for weapons etc. It is great attack aircraft with air to surface missles and bombs and superb air tot air fighting capability. The Hornet exist in four versions. The F/A-18A single seat Fighter/Attack aircraft. The F/A-18B is a two seat version. The F/A-18C single seater with additional electronic warfare systems, and the F/A-18D two seater version with night intercept capability. It is used by the U.S..Navy, U.S.Marines, Canada, Australia, and several orther allied countries.
