Description

When the War broke out in 1939 the Royal Navy`s Fleet air arm was equipped with a number of old fighter aircraft. These were not capable of competing with the land based fighters of the day and there were not sufficient numbers of spitfires and Hurricanes available to equip the Navy`s aircraft carriers. Fairey Aviation proposed a design based on their Battle light bomber with a Rolls-Royce VIII 1085hp Melin engine. This first flew on 4th January 1940 and became the MK.I. The firt squadron to receive the aircraft was No806NAS, on board HMS Illustrious in June of that year. The Fulmars operated mainly in the Mediterranean and were succesful against the Italian Air Force, but with the arrival of the Luftwaffe, they were out performance a Merlin 30 engine of 1030hp was added and this became the MK.II. The fulmar also against Japanese when No803 and *06 Squadrons were sent to Ceylon.
