PZL P-11c "K.O.P."
The PZL P11 was the main fighter in Polish Air Force inventory in September 1939, at the outbreak of the Second World War. By the standards of WW2 aviation, the PZL had been passed by by the rapid acceleration of aviation engineering. The PZL was no match for the Luftwaffe 109, yet was surprisingly agile and plucky in combat. The fact that a PZL was the first aircraft shot down in WW2 is widely quoted in history books (Capt. Mieczys?????aw Medwecki, shot down by a JU87 on 1 Sept.); what is less well known is that the aircraft avenged itself a few minutes later, shooting down 3 Dornier 17 bombers. The PZ11 suffered from being a bit too fragile and being undergunned-- however, the cockpit visibility on the PZ11 was actually superior to a 109, and it could actually turn inside the heavier fighter's arc. The Nazi regime was not eager to admit it, but the Polish craft actually performed very admirably, considering its multiple disadvantages, and the Luftwaffe did not have it quite their own way
