StuH 42
The StuG III series was based on the Lower hull of the Pz.Kpfw. III with a fixed upper superstructure. Its sturdy design made it easy to upgrade the vehicle with a 7.5cm L/43 gun and then again to 7.5cm StuK40 L/48 which made the tank killer one of the best seen in WWII.
Due to the dramtic role change of the StuG, the infantry were left without direct fire support. In order to solve this, another version was created to mount the 10.5cm le F.H. 18 howitzer in the StuG III Ausf. G designated StuH 42 Ausf. G for short. The difference in the StuG and the StuH was mainly in the gun, gun sleeve and ammunition storage. The StuH was used to provide much needed infantry fire support whilst maintaining some anti-tank capability with hollow charged 105mm shells.
A ratio of 7 StuG to 3 StuH vehicles in each Battery was seen as the best combination, but rarely achieved
