The panzer III was originally conceived to be the main tank of the German fighting forces, before this role was usurped by the previously conceived and designed Panzer IV. Nevertheless, the Panzer III was still manufactured until 1943 and served as support right up until the end of the war.
The Ausf.M was the penultimate version of the Pz.Kpfw.III, and differed in that the lower hull escape hatches were omitted, which allowed more ammunition to be carried, along with the forward-side vision ports on the turret. It also had a revised exhaust arrangement that would reduce the vehicles heat signature at night as well as allow a degree of wading capability.
