The Japanese automaker Nissan in 2003 took part for the first time to the race of the Dakar Rally, the second most important motor sports competition after the famous Japanese GT Championship. With the achievement of the 5th Place and wins in 5 stages Nissan showed great potential in the first year. By the year 2003 together with some improvements, the 2004-spec car was more competitive. The modifications included improved aerodynamics of the body, increasing the average speed of the 1750 kg heavy pickups and better visibility for the driver. The 271-horsepower, 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine has been maintained, the vehicle is fitted better overall for the rocky sections of the race. Colin McRae, the successful former WRC driver and World Champion took in 2004 for the first time participated in the Dakar Rally. His driving skills, even on unfamiliar terrain, he was in two of the 17 stages, which he shared with his Swedish co-driver Tina Thorner - won expertly.
