At the time of the Second World War, in the Japanese army medieval traditions still held good alongside modern concepts. They still followed the Bushido Code, which taught the virtues of hand to hand combat in the machine age. No surrender to the enemy was permitted. In accordance with their code the Japanese defended the Island of Iwo Jima to the last man in order to prevent the Americans from conquering the Japanese mainland.
