Description

The German Navy's famous sail training ship was introduced into service on 17.12.1958. This barque was named after the writer Johann Kinau who was well known under the pseudonym "Gorch Fock", and who fell in 1916 at the battle of the Skagerak. The Gorch Fock is the fifth ship of this class, her sister ships were built during the thirties and served various nations. Home part of the ship is Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein. The Gorch Fock has a displacement of 1.870 tonnes and a sail area of 2.037 square metres. Her cruising speed with diesel auxiliary engines amounts to 10 knots. The manning consists o 76 regular crew members and approximately 200 officer trainees. The work of the Gorch Fock encompasses the theoretical and practical training in seamanship of officers and sub-officer as well as "showing the Flag" and public relations work. She also takes part regularly in international meetings and regattas.
