The oil tanker "Esso Glasgow" belongs to the group of ESSO developed T2-type. T2 was supported by the "U.S. Maritime Commission" chosen to compensate for a deficit in tonnage. The total of 520 ships of the type T2 was built in two versions, the T2-SE-A1 (with a total of 476 units) and the T2-SE-A2 (with a total of 44 ships). The tanker "Esso Glasgow" belongs to the former version. A 6600 hp steam turbine drove a generator that supplied a directly connected to the propeller shaft electric motor.
Although this type of ship "cobbled together" in a hurry was that ships were sometimes very long time and were in some cases more than 40 years of service. These tankers transporting oil, gasoline and other refined products from the Esso Fawley refinery and Milford Haven in the UK to the numerous ESSO own stock items that were scattered around the coast of Great Britain.
