Description

The USS heavy cruiser Indianapolis was a US Navy warship of the Portland Class. She was used in the War in the Pacific against Japan. The Indianapolis, which a few days earlier had carried the atomic components for the atom bomb "Little Boy", designed to be dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, from the West Coast of the USA to Tinian Island (north of Guam), was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-58 on 30th July 1945. The ship quickly keeled over to the starboard side and sank within 12 minutes.

During the Second World War, the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) operated as the flagship of the US 5th Fleet in the Pacific. This vessel, which had been in service since 1932, was equipped with the latest fire control technology and rapid-fire anti-aircraft guns. She had a top speed of 33 knots. In July 1945 theIndianapolis, under strict secrecy, brought the components of the Hiroshima atomic bomb to the air force base on Tinian. On 30th July 1945, during the subsequent voyage to Leyte Island, the Indianapolis was sunk by 2 torpedoes froma Japanese submarine. The sinking received worldwide fame with the 1991 film "Mission of the Shark - the Saga of the USS Indianapolis".
