'' IL-28 Beagle ''
he Il-28 was a light jet bomber made for the Soviet Air Force. It was contemporary with the British Canberra bomber. It was general purpose and served as a bomber, a reconnaissance plane, a torpedo plane and a trainer. It was a mixture of old configuration features such as straight wings and a glazed nose but with modern design items such as a bubble canopy and ejection seat. The first flight was made on 8 July 1948 and it entered service in 1950. The Il-28 was widely exported with over 24 different countries using it. The Chinese built several hundred as the Harbin H-5. During the many short wars between Israel and Egypt in the 1950-1970 time period the destruction on the ground of the Egyptian Il-28s was a priority of the Israeli Air Force. The Il-28 saw limited use in Vietnam and in Afganistan. Over 6731 Il-28s were built over a couple of decades. The Soviet Union retired its Il-28s in the 1980s and the last Soviet built airplanes were retired by Egypt in the 1990s. T are still Il-28s in service with the North Korean Air Force.
