'' Modern German ISAF Soldiers ''
Germany has been one of the biggest ISAF troop-contributing nations since NATO took command of operations in August 2003. At present some 2900 German soldiers are serving in Afghanistan. The Bundestag mandate permits the deployment of up to 3000 soldiers. A total of 37 nations contribute roughly 35,000 soldiers to the ISAF force.
German soldiers are deployed in the Kabul and Northern ISAF regions.
The two ISAF PRTs in Kunduz and Feyzabad are led by Germany, with a dual civilian-military command. In addition, Germany currently provides the Regional Commander (North), who is based in Mazar-e-Sharif.
