Description

Unique green sails and over 100 years of history give this elegant sailing ship an unmistakable image. The hull of the bark "Alexander von Humboldt" was built in 1906 following the design of the sailing ship "Bismarck" and was first used as a floating light vessel named "Reserve Sonderburg". In 1986 the ship renamed the "Kiel" was replaced by an modern lighthouse. At this time "The Sail Training Association Germany" was looking for a large sailing ship to work with young people and found the ideal basis in the "Kiel" with its windjammer hull. The Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training (German Sail Training Foundation) was set up and with financial assistance from the Beck & Co. brewery and a businessman in Bremen, the conversion to a bark was started. Under the auspices of the DSST the youth training windjammer was created with the aim of offering to young people from all over the world a school at sea and an unforgettable learning experience. As an introduction to the North Sea Week in 1988 the "Dream under 25 sails" began with the naming of the vessel after "Alexander von Humboldt" the renowned German explorer and natural scientist. Since then she has been a regular guest at windjammer reviews and has sailed round the world several times.
