Following the Soviet Union's Decision to put pressure on the Western Allies, shipments of goods by rail and the autobahn came to a halt. A desperate Berlin looked to the West for help. Surviving a noramlly harsh German winter, the airlift carried over two million tonnes of supplies in 270,000 flights. The blockade was finally lifted on May 12th 1949.
