Description

The Mk.IX Spitfire was to all intents and purposes a more powerful version of the Mk.V and was originally powered by the RR Merlin 61 engine. It was now able to match the Fw 190 and many pilots considered it to be the best mark of Spitfire. It entered service in July 1942 and was supplied to many foreign air forces both during and after the war. Later versions had the pointed rudder and some the “bubble top” making it the same as the Mk.XVI. The Mk.IX was also converted into a two seat trainer but never with the RAF. It had a span of 36’ 10” and a length of 31’ ½”, had two 20mm cannon and four machine guns and could carry 1000lb. Of bombs when used as a fighter-bomber
