Description

During "Operation Barbarossa" in the Soviet Union, in the first winter of war in 1941, the German High Command realised that the traditional truck was not suitable for the harsh climate and terrain. The vehicles often got stuck in the deep snow. In order to solve this problem, in 1942 the "Maultier" (mule) was developed. It was a variation on a production truck, on which the rear axle was replaced by a caterpillar track. From 1943, Daimler-Benz produced a half-track based on the all-wheel drive L4500R with the tracked assembly of the armoured fighting vehicle PzKpfw. II. The vehicle designated L4500R had a load carrying capacity of 4.5 tonnes.
