For many Leonardo was the great humanist of the Renaissance. He spent his lifetime trying to reproduce everything about mankind - proportions, functions and emotions. His most famous study on this is the "Vitruvian Man". The study represented the bodily proportions of the average renaissance man. A similar thing had been done 1500 years earlier by the Roman architect Vitruvius. This dual representation of a man however is specific to Leonardo. There are many interpretations of Vitruvian man. Some believe that in this study of Renaissanceman Leonardo wished to compare him with Roman man, Others suggest that this representation of a man simultaneously in a square and in a circle is the graphic conversion of a square into a circle with the same circumference.
In anycase the Vitruvian man is a genuine piece of art history that is now available for the first time as a wooden model.
