Probably the best known and most famous British fighter plane of World War II isthe Spitfire, which due to many improvements and modifications became even more effective. The Spitfire Mk.XVI was the last version with a Merlin engine and went into massproduction from autumn 1944 onwards. Optimized for the low-flying role, it also received the long 20 mm gun barrels. A total of 36 RAF squadrons were equipped with the Mk.XVI which remained in service until 1951.
