The first studies of the precursor of the Tu-22, the aircraft 105 began in 1954, after an order of the Ministers of the USSR. The actual construction work started after wind tunnel studies in 1955 at the Tupolev design bureau. The plane had 105 on 21 June 1958 on its maiden flight. Progression to 105A aircraft was already in 1957. This aircraft also had the typical Tupolev-displacement tank on the wings as received by the chassis. From the beginning, the aircraft 105A was planned as a nuclear carrier. Two planes 105A and an airframe built and on 7 September 1959 launched the first copy of the first flight. The first version of Tu-22A was similar to its American counterpart (Convair B-58), equipped with free-fall nuclear bombs. 15 of them were built.
