USS INDEPENDENCE LCS-2
The Littoral Combat Ship is a new class of vessel being built for the US Navy. Currently two are being tested, They are USS Freedom (LCS-1) and the USS Independence (LCS-2). The USS Independence is a high speed trimaran, based on an Australian company design, and is capable of over 44 Knots. The hull features the latest in stealth technology to reduce the radar signature and carries a comprehensive electronic warfare and sensor suit. It is armed with a 57mm gun and 1 x SeaRAM CIWS, and can carry helicopters and UAV's. This class of ship is small at 2,784 tons full load and is designed for in-shore (littoral) opperations such as clandestine landings and scouting hostile shores. It can carry a variety of modules to carry out its mission. Power is provided by 2 x LM2500 gas turbines and 2 x MTU 20V8000 diesel engines.
