Pirate ships were usually armed private vessels commissioned by one country with letters of marque - commissions granted to ship owners allowing attacks on an enemy nation's war ships or commerce. Seamen serving on pirate ships were not paid in regular wages, but in shares of the loot taken from ships they had attacked.
