The 170 V was the most successful model of the pre-war era, replacing the Type 170 after five and a half years as the most successful Mercedes-Benz with 14,000 units produced.

With the same engine capacity, the new model was more powerful. Technically and in terms of styling, it was more advanced and also less expensive than its predecessor. This virtually guaranteed the immediate success of the 170 V – it was destined to become a top seller. The “V” (indicating the initial of the German word for Front) in the type designation was used not to distinguish this from its predecessor model, but from the rear-engined 170 H produced at the time with essentially the same engine. The 170 H (indicating the initial of the German word for Rear) was targeted as a more powerful and improved successor to the Type 130, introduced two years previously as the first rear-engined Mercedes-Benz. In contrast to its stable mate, the 170 V with its conventional drive concept, only 1,500 units of the 170 H were produced.
